Cozumel EventsJanuary• Jan 1st: Public holiday. February• Cozumel Carnival. This carnival features parades, floats, traditional regional foods, dancing and musicians from Mexico, Belize and Cuba. March• Vernal Equinox. Late March. Visitors come to the main temple at Chichen Itza to see the descent of the serpent Kukulkan. History has it that the Maya constructed the temple in a way that during equinox a beam of sunlight creates a shadow moving down towards earth resembling a slithering snake. This occurrence is supposed to bring out a good harvest. April• Fiesta Del Cedral. Last weekend in April. An annual agricultural festival on Cozumel to celebrate the first Catholic mass in Mexico, which was celebrated in El Cedral. Activities include fair, cattle exhibitions, bullfights, children's rides and dancing. • Cozumel International Fishing Rodeo. International sport-fishing tournament that brings together competitors from around the world to fish for dorado, marlin, tuna, sierra and other game fish. May• Cozumel's International Billfish Tournament. Competitors from around the world compete in this tournament. June• Navy Day Fishing Tournament. Marine Day fishing tournament, an annual fishing tournament. • San Pedro y San Pablo. A religious festival honoring Saint Peter and Saint Paul, complete with a fair, rides, food and craft shows. September• Fiesta de San Miguel. Cozumel holds a festival to commemorate St. Michael, the patron saint of San Miguel. • 16 Sep. Independence Day. For the less devout, it's an excuse for a party. Many hotels and restaurants hold their own posada festivities. • Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Virgin of Guadalupe’s commemorative day).A processional commemorating the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, groups of runners race around the island in relays.
